The Secret Behind Dyson Bladeless Fans-All That You Need to Know

British tech manufacturer and electronic company head James Dyson and his team in 2009 came up with a new model of fans and created a great revolution in fan technology. They called it bladeless fans.  Though Toshiba, another well known Japanse Brand, claim that they first introduced the concept of the bladeless fan. But their first bladeless fan was not accepted by the customers. So, after a year later, they stopped manufacturing bladeless fan. Dyson is the only bladeless fan manufacturing company that is successfully producing bladeless fan for more than a decade. Simply, Dyson fans apparently take the technology of fans and comfort to another level.

What Is This Bladeless Fan?

Just as the name suggests, bladeless fans simply mean the fans that do product air circulation but do not have visible spinning blades like a traditional fan.

Very, of course, this is precisely why this absolute innovative production of tech is called a ‘Bladeless fan.’ In such fans, the air is blown from a ring, without the help of any external blades, in sharp contrast to those conventional fans that we commonly use today- which use the blade to create high motion or blow of air.

Now, few questions might cross your mind when you read or get to know bladeless fans or Dyson fans- how do these bladeless fans work?

How is air flow created from an empty ring?

What is Air Multiplier Technology? How is it quieter?

Well, you can get all your answers here. Read on to know more about Dyson fans and how they work.

History of Dyson Bladeless Tower Fan

Though the air multiplier/ bladeless technology is claimed to be invented by Dyson’s company, there are records of the development of bladeless fans by a Japanese company called Tokyo Shibaura Electric in the year 1981.

Somewhere directly or indirectly, this latest air multiplier has its roots in this design that was made 30 years ago.

It’s functioning, and design was quite similar to that of Air Multiplier fans developed by Dyson’s team.

Dyson is also facing troubles in obtaining a patent and other securities on this product’s technology and design due to the existence of the documents of the Japanese company.

How do Dyson Bladeless Fans Work?

Now you have an idea of bladeless fans. Let’s now get a better look at how bladeless fans work.

The functioning of Bladeless fans is considerably different from that of traditional fans, which uses its fast spinning blades to create a torrent of air.

In the case of conventional fans, we have this problem that the fast spinning blades can cut away anything that’s on its way and this can pose a severe danger, particularly if you have kids in your family.

And if you cage the fan to avoid such danger, the airflow can be interrupted and may not produce the desired airflow.

In the case of bladeless fans, you don’t have this problem. In a sentence, what air multiplier does is that it sucks the air at its base and thrust it out at high speed.

Well, these have no “visible blades”. These fans have small-sized blades at their base which does the work of sucking in the air from an opening in there.

These blades are operated by a small electric brushless motor and according to what Dyson and team claims, each second this pulls up around 20 liters of air.

The Inducement and entrainment theories of the principle of Fluid Dynamics are in operation with these fans.

What is called Inducement refers to the mechanism of drawing the air behind the tube along with the air that exits from the front of the fan which was earlier sucked up at its base?

As these air sucked at the bottom and the “induced” air flows to the front, the air surrounding the fan edges to flow in the same direction and this mechanism is referred to as Entrainment.

With the help of inducement and entrainment, the fan produces 15 times multiplied airflow in respect to the amount of air sucked at its base, and this implies that every second it can 300 liters of air! This is how Air Multiplier works.

Difficult to get the science behind Dyson fan??

Lets take a look that Dyson Founder Sir James Dyson explanin how the work

Drawback of the Previous Version of Dyson Fans

Well, the earlier versions of Dyson fans did have one drawback even when it’s functioning was totally outstanding- it’s noise.

These disadvantages lead to the designing of later, quieter and better versions of Air Multiplier fans.

This development, though, did cost Dyson a pretty hefty amount.

How they Solve the Previous Version Limitations?

Engineers and researchers in an attempt to listen to every sound made by this fan. They kept it in a soundproof chamber having ten microphones.

Later they passed ultraviolet paint and smoked it, and High-speed cameras captured the process, offering visual clues as to areas where the air was bunching up and causing a ruckus.

Of course, Air turbulence has a significant role to play in the matter of noise. Helmholtz cavities can be added and manipulated to control this sound.

The engineers tuned this to reduce the airflow turbulence and set the range to 1000 Hz. This makes the latest versions of Dyson fans 70-75% quieter than the earlier versions.

Of course, it is the next level of comfort!

    1. Hey Lewis,

Thanks for the question. Well, a bladeless fan is nothing but a normal fan. Just there is a difference in the working mechanism. So, the procedure of turning on a bladeless fan is just like a normal electric fan. There must be a power button in the fan control panel or in the remote controller that comes with the unit. All you need to do press it using any of the buttons and your bladeless fan will start blowing air.

      Hopefully this helps,

      Thanks.
